Juror's Choice Award

Dimensions: 36 x 36 x 1.5
Inspiration:: A study in levels of consciousness and the stillness of memories that delves into complex layers of human awareness. Memories can be seen as static snapshots of our lives, suspended in time, as we evolve and move forward. Yet, this stillness is an illusion, while the memory itself remains unchanged, our interpretations of it shift and evolve with new life experiences. Once triggered these memories resurface influencing our consciousness and sense of presence.
Materials and Process:: Dried chamomile, coffee grounds, acrylic, Flashe paint, pastel and pencil on raw canvas.

Dimensions: 6 x 6 x 2
Inspiration:: Flowers symbolize the cycle of life: they bud, bloom, and eventually wither. Much like the human body, their physical form transforms as they progress through their life stages. My work delves into the stillness within this cycle. Just as a flower pauses in full bloom before it begins to wither, there are moments in our lives that require us to simply be still and exist.
Materials and Process:: Dried chamomile, dried echinacea, dried hops, dried lavender, acrylic, pastel and pencil on canvas in shadow box frame.

Dimensions: 13 x 16 x 1
Inspiration:: The silent stillness of this reflective pool was an extreme contrast to the nearby Selfoss and the mighty Dettifoss, (the most powerful waterfall in Europe) in Jokulsargljufur Canyon, Iceland. It was only a few metres away from the dramatic power and almost deafening sound of the waterfalls.

Dimensions: 18 x 12 x 1.5
Inspiration:: Shinrin-Yoku is the Japanese art of forest bathing, the simple practice of therapeutic relaxation in the forest, focusing on sensory engagement with nature. Time hiking on our wonderful Island causes me to slow down, still my mind, breathe deeply and really take everything in: the sounds, the smells and the interplay of colours enhanced by light filtering through the tree canopy and the winter rain or mist.
Materials and Process:: Mixed media - analog and digital collage, including my photography; acrylic paint and mediums; finished with cold wax and oil.

CA$400.00

Dimensions: 20 x 20 x 1.5
Inspiration:: This abstract piece reimagines the classic concept of still life, by bringing life to its static form. I focus on plant cuttings — living fragments in a constant process of growth and transformation. Unlike traditional still life subjects, they are not dead or inert, but active, evolving, pushing against the very concept of stasis. Through the subtle unfolding of leaves or slow extension of roots, they remind us that we live in a world always moving, even when we see — and seek — stillness.
Materials and Process:: Acrylic on canvas

Ranjeet Dhaliwal
CA$500.00

Dimensions: 30 x 24 x 0.5
Inspiration:: Of all the photos taken at a festive gathering, this one made me catch my breath. The subject is the sheer joy expressed by my teenage daughter, Dani, and her niece, Priya, both absorbed in that precise moment, oblivious to all else. I was struck by the oneness in their expression of utter jubilation. The image, flowing with radiant energy, is a celebration and embrace of the spontaneity of Life. The spirit of the moment is caught, converging on the vortex of their dance. Still. Alive. Forever.
Materials and Process:: In the original photograph, the field is wider with more busyness but for me, the photographer, there was only one focus, so I cropped the photo. I converted it to black and white for it lends timelessness and enhances the emotion and energy.

Dimensions: 14 x 11 x 0.5
Inspiration:: Since I was wee, I have been drawn to sunflowers, enjoying their look and feel. One year, we built a sunflower fort for our young visitors, and planted sunflower seeds randomly throughout the garden, making a sunflower forest for our pets. I observed this particular sunflower as it went from seed, to flower, to seed head. The image of the petals enclosed –yet opening–stays my breath, filling my heart with quietude. This moment of suspension, of awakening, is full of stillness and life.
Materials and Process:: This sunflower beckoned me one morning. Captured by its beauty and uniqueness, I took a photo. The image, printed on archival paper, was not digitally manipulated.

Dimensions: 17 x 41 x 0.5
Inspiration:: For a moment in the crisp winter air, I pause, gazing at the smooth curve of bare rock merging seamlessly into patches of lichen, then moss. The natural progression leads to a row of Garry oaks, their forms gracefully bending along the path that peeks through a lattice of leafless branches. The stillness is profound as warm light filters through, illuminating the arcs of the branches. Light and shadow play across the undulating landscape beyond the path, inviting me to breathe deeply and absorb

CA$50.00

Dimensions: 10 x 10 x 1.5
Inspiration:: Most of my sculptures are relief works made from natural materials collected from beaches near my home. I choose former living materials that have been tossed by the ocean and dried naturally on the beach. Although they were living and are now dead and still, I give them a new life in whimsical works of art: driftwood becomes a 'hill' and 'ground', a kelp holdfast becomes a 'tree'. Although they are still, they still represent life.
Materials and Process:: Driftwood, kelp holdfast, rock, and shell on a fabric base
