Humpback whales require stillness, attention, and imagination to "see", as most of their bulk remains under water and the evidence of them is a fraction of their immense size. Like the Japanese garden in which the whole is never seen in its entirety, the whale can only be appreciated in parts- a flipper, the spout of an exhale, the tail flukes shown as a whale dives. Like the Japanese garden engenders quietude, so does even a glimpse of a whale.
