Liz Hughes

Formally trained as a photographer, I quickly wanted to push my creative boundaries and sought ways to combine photography with other mediums.  That led me to explore encaustic painting and an immediate understanding of the need/benefits of additional formal training.  I completed fine arts programs (Citation and Certificate) at the University of Alberta and have also taken a multitude of art-related courses and workshops throughout North America, Europe and Africa.

Statement

I am a photographer, printmaker and mixed media artist.  My current body of work generally starts with water-based media, often incorporating collage elements, including photography, digital art and paper I have handprinted or painted. My process often cycles back to my love for wax, formerly encaustic, now cold wax and oil. Still working in layers, obscuring then revealing / waxing and waning, I continue to explore the interplay between light and colour.
